How to Paint Doors and Windows?

In this article, we will show you how to paint doors and windows. Painting your doors and windows is a great way to update the look of your home without a huge investment. This project can be done in a day with very little mess or fuss.

Sanding work

Once you have prepared your work surface and removed the hardware from your doors, it is time to sand. Sanding removes all old paint and gives a smooth base for the new paint. Use an orbital sander with 120-220 grit paper or 150 – 220 Grit sandpaper that will remove any existing finish without too much effort. For heavily chipped or damaged areas, consider using a chemical paint stripper instead.

Prime

Then prime. If walls and ceilings are bare plaster or drywall, apply a primer before moving to the next step. If you already have existing paint in good condition and want your new color to match exactly, use an eggshell finish latex paint as a top coat over the old finish for better durability. However, if you are looking for a fresh new color that stands out, go ahead and start with an eggshell or satin finish paint.

Fill the holes

Then fill the holes using spackling paste. This will give you a smooth surface to work with and leave no bumps or bulges between coats of paint.

Caulk joints

Caulk the gaps between the primed woodwork and the door frame or window frame before you paint. Pull the caulk gun back over the caulk to get rid of any air pockets.

If you want a high-gloss finish, leave out this last step and move on to painting your doors or windows in the color of your choice. For a more natural look that’s flat or satin, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper after caulking before applying.

Paint

Then, it is time for the color! Give yourself enough time for each coat of paint to dry before applying another one. With that being said, don’t wait too long in-between coats because this could cause your paint to dry out and start peeling off.

Next, choose your colors. If you want to match existing colors in the room, take pictures of them on your phone when they look their best (sunlight will make colors appear differently) so you can match the colors accurately.

Once you have painted your doors and windows, it’s time to add new hardware if desired. This is often a good way to make them look brand new! If you are painting white or light-colored furniture, use semi-gloss paint for better durability in high-traffic areas like hallways and entryways.

The most popular method for painting doors is to use an airless sprayer rather than brush and roller. An airless sprayer applies the paint quickly with very little mess compared to traditional methods of brushing on one coat at a time. A good-quality airless sprayer will have a self-priming pump, so do not skip this step.
